Step by step guide
Preparation
- First, I measured the available space in my hallway and planned the layout. I wanted enough cabinets for all sorts of trash, laundry, and my gym gear. And of course, there also had to be room for dirty shoes and wet coats in this "mudroom"!
- I ordered the "frame" in 18mm MDF and designed custom doors. The frame of these "shaker doors" is made of 18mm thick rails and stiles. The panels that fit into these frames are 12mm thick. I also ordered triangular shapes (also available at opmaatzagen.nl!) from 12mm MDF to create inserts that tilt forward with the door. These can hold a waste bin or laundry basket. This saves a lot of turning space in my already narrow hallway!
Montage
- I first assembled the skeleton of the hallway closet. For each compartment, this involves two beams and two uprights, which I secured together and to the wall.
- Using the pocket holes, I joined the rails and stiles for the doors. Then I milled a 12mm deep groove out of the back of these frames so the panel could be inserted and glued in place.
- I drilled holes in the bottom of the doors and placed overlay hinges in them, so that the cabinet doors can be opened forward.
- Finally, I screwed together triangular inserts and attached them to the doors. This way, the insert extends forward with the door, allowing you to easily store your trash or laundry with a small opening.
Finish
- I finished the cabinet with MDF primer and am still looking for a nice color to paint it with. Waste bins and laundry baskets of the appropriate size have been ordered!
