Be inspired by Doris's beautiful DIY project: a custom-made kitchen bar with a handy compartment cabinet. This unique piece is not only functional but also adds a stylish touch to your kitchen.
Function and Placement
The kitchen bar serves as a handy backplate and storage space in a modern kitchen. The shelving unit is ideal for displaying and storing cookbooks, wine bottles, or decorative plants.
Structure and Design
Doris chose warm-colored woods that contrast perfectly with the light colors of the countertop. The bar is sleek and minimalist, with a natural wood finish. The project looks stunning in the kitchen and draws attention as a true eye-catcher.
Unique Features and Customization
What makes this design special are the details that meet Doris's needs. The use of custom-cut wood from TOSIZE.lu ensures that the project has exactly the right dimensions for the kitchen space.
Benefits of Making It Yourself
Making something yourself gives you the freedom to play with dimensions and materials. You choose the types of wood and finish yourself, and it is often kinder to your budget. Moreover, it gives a tremendous sense of satisfaction to have your own creation standing in your home.
Industrial Style
The kitchen bar and shelving unit exude an industrial atmosphere. With the warm tones of the wood and the sleek design, it brings a sense of modern coziness into the kitchen.
Used Wood Types
The choice of Plywood Interior Poplar B/BB was perfect for this project. This type of wood offers lightweight options and a beautiful finish. Its durability and fine grain make it ideal for a kitchen environment. Additionally, it is easy to work with, which is ideal for DIY projects.
DIY tips
A tip for assembling your furniture is to use clamps and dowels. This ensures a sturdy construction without any visible screws. Also, make sure to measure the wood accurately and plan your layout in advance. This prevents surprises during construction.

Step by step guide
Preparation
- Think very carefully in advance about what you want to make, what you need, and measure accurately. Allow a margin of a few millimeters. I measured too tightly, which unfortunately meant I had to do a lot of sanding on the cut-to-size pieces (also due to an uneven floor).
- Prime everything and apply the first coat of paint.
Montage
- Assemble the back panel and side panel together (glue and nails) and stick on the skirting boards.
- Assembling a small compartment cabinet with dowels and glue
Finish
- Second coat of paint
- Slide the back/side panel into the kitchen bar and slide the compartment cabinet against it. They remain separate so that they are easy to remove if necessary.
- The back panel will receive a second coat of paint, and the cabinet will get a plinth.
