Step by step guide
Preparation
- I had to fix a safety gate to the wall, to prevent my one y-o from climbing up and possibly tubmling down the stairs. First attempt I simply fixed the hinge to the drywall, but it came down after opening and closing a couple of times. So I thought to screw it on a wall stud, which I located with a stud finder, but it didn’t align with the wooden rails on the other side of the stairs, on which the latch of the gate has to be attached. So I got a small, custom-sized panel to attach on the stud and extending to the desired location on the wall, on which I could fix the hinge.
Montage
- I used 80 mm screws to go through the 30 mm panel, 13 mm drywall (Google search says that’s the standard in sweden), and anchor a solid 37 mm into the stud. Hopefully this will give enough support in case my sons decide to hang on or climb the gate. I used a 30 mm panel to match the width of the skirting board, on which the lower hinge is attached. Fixing the screws was rather straightforward with a power drill, although the panel tends to rotate with the first screw.
Finish
- We are not too concerned about the patchwork appeareance of the result, so no extra finishing for now.
- In hindsight, the choice of timberwood was suboptimal, as it cracked when I drilled a screw too close to the edge (this was actually mentioned as a risk on the website, but lack of experience made me underestimate the possibility). MDF would have probably been a better option (or plywood, but this width was only available as whole sheet, making it too expensive). However, the whole thing looks solid enough and it’s holding on well at the moment. If this keeps working for a week or so I’ll do the same to attach a gate at the top of the stairs.
